Make Waxing More Relaxing . . .

Smaller, more sensitive areas of the body can enjoy waxing sessions with less pain by using hard wax instead of soft wax. Hard wax is applied to the skin in a thick layer and is left on for several seconds to harden before it is pulled off—no strips involved.
Hard wax has many benefits. It’s generally easier on sensitive skin, and is very easy to manipulate in nooks and crannies, so to speak. Because it only sticks to the hairs, and not the skin itself, it can be put on in layers, so if there is still hair left over after the first try, another layer can be applied.
This cannot be done with soft “strip” wax since that type of wax removes a small layer of skin with it, which is why some people find this method more painful, especially in the bikini area.
So why not use hard wax everywhere? It would take forever to wax larger areas of the body! Strip wax can be applied all the way down the leg and removed in one long piece of muslin at once. Hard wax is best for eyebrows, lip, chin, underarms, bikini—even toes, hands, ears, and nose. Soft or strip wax is best for arms, legs, chest, and back hair.
Be sure to ask your aesthetician what wax methods she uses next time you make an appointment.

The Reason for Rosacea …

Millions of people suffer from rosacea, a relatively common inflammatory condition that can make the face undesirably ruddy and bumpy. Fortunately, in recent years, medical minds have made a huge leap in understanding and treating this frustrating skin problem.

Doctors have long been able to identify what triggers rosacea flare-ups—anything from spicy food to embarrassment—but they didn’t know why patients had the condition in the first place. Research from the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine highlights breakthrough evidence about the reasons behind the condition.

“Too much SCTE (stratum corneum tryptic enzymes) and too much cathelicidin leads to the abnormal peptides that cause the symptoms of this disease,” dermatology division chief Dr. Richard L. Gallo wrote in a study. Although this may not mean much to the layman, it means huge potential for doctors and pharmaceutical companies in their efforts to streamline treatment.

“Antibiotics tend to alleviate the symptoms of rosacea in patients because some of them work to inhibit these enzymes,” Gallo continued; however, “our findings may modify the therapeutic approach to treating rosacea, since bacteria aren’t the right target.”

Do haircuts make your hair grow faster?

One of the greatest debates and oldest myths in the beauty book is the belief that cutting your hair will make it grow faster. Let’s settle this right now, once and for all!

Your hair will not physically grow any faster, thicker or stronger if you cut it more frequently. What you do to the ends simply doesn’t effect the roots.

However, frequent cuts can make your locks look healthier, since cutting hair eliminates split and gnarled ends.

Hair grows, on average, at a rate of about a half-inch per month, so experts recommend regular cuts about every two months, particularly if you’re letting your hair grow long. This will help it look its best as it gets longer.

Cross the Street to Look Younger

You probably know that pollution is a fearsome factor in skin aging, as it’s brimming with the free radicals that damage cells. It can’t always be completely avoided, especially if you’re a city-dwelling pedestrian, but British scientists have found that just crossing the street could protect you from the most harmful batches of toxins.

Over the course of two months, a research team from the University of Leeds monitored pollution levels at a busy London intersection. They discovered that, in addition to where the traffic is standing, pollution tends to build in “hotspots” on the leeward (sheltered) side of the street, depending on the roof-level wind direction.

“The leeward side of the street had consistently higher concentrations of carbon monoxide than the windward side,” explained professor Alison Tomlin. “The same trends would be expected for other traffic-related pollutants such as ultra-fine particles and nitrogen dioxide.”

These environmental elements can prevent cells from functioning properly, even causing inflammation in some instances. This can lead to accelerated signs of skin aging.

“Pollution can be trapped within the street where it is emitted by recirculating winds,” Tomlin said. “It would be worth cyclists and pedestrians rethinking their regular routes, as they can massively reduce their pollution exposure by moving just one street away from the main traffic thoroughfares.”

How to Know When Your Beauty Products Expire

We know how much you love that perfect pink lipstick. Or the eyeliner that’s been sharpened down to no more than a nub. But there comes a point when you have to let go and accept the reality that your favorite beauty products eventually become breeding grounds for bacteria. This article will tell you how to know what’s still good and what’s past its prime.

A Little Waxing Wisdom …

Waxing is a popular option for removing hair from the legs, bikini, underarms and face. However, in order to get the best results, you need to let your hair grow out for three to four weeks.

Although somewhat painful—imagine a bandage being quickly ripped off your skin—nearly all hair and skin types can use this method of hair removal, except, perhaps, for extremely sensitive skin, since wax can potentially tear or burn.

You can ask your aesthetician to apply a pre-waxing oil, which prevents hot wax from sticking to the skin, so it adheres only to the hair for a less painful experience.

You should stop using any products that contain retinol three to four weeks prior to your waxing appointment, since retinol encourages cell turnover and renders skin more sensitive.
