We all know about sugar’s link to diabetes and weight gain, but it may surprise you to know that it can also contribute to how old you look.
According to Meriden, CT, dermatologist Dr. Nicholas Perricone, MD, processed and refined sugars play a pretty significant role in inflammation and advanced aging. “Glycation is the long-term effect that sugar has on the body,” he says. “High-glycemic foods are loaded with sugars that, when released, bind to proteins in the cells and to collagen in the skin. This sugar-protein bond also produces free radicals, which drive the production of inflammation. This glycation makes it difficult for cells to function properly, resulting in destructions to all organ systems, including the skin.”
Even though it’s hard to omit sugar entirely from your diet, natural sugars are thought to not cause a quick spike in blood sugar (since they help the body absorb sugar) like refined and processed sugars can, although any amount of sugar can cause it to climb somewhat.

For many of us, hair irons are like coffee, we can’t start the day without it. New research says that damage caused by hair irons can actually make hair frizzier and curlier resulting in a straightening cycle that can eventually cause hair to appear thin and dull.
Although hair is very strong, high heat, like that from a flat iron, will damage the cuticle of the hair, or the hard outer protective coating on each strand. Repeated straightening can cause the cuticle to breakdown altogether. This starts as split ends but can eventually reach all the way up the hair, resulting in the strand breaking off. More and more women are reporting signs of hair loss but, the truth is, their hair is just breaking off due to their flat iron addiction.
We know what you’re thinking, “But I use heat protecting products on my hair!” According to experts, although heat defense products do partially reduce the damage, your hair is still affected if you iron your hair every day.
So what should you do if your hair has been damaged? First of all, lay off the iron for a little while. Treat frizz with a trim instead of reaching for the iron. Sleeping on silk pillowcases can help prevent frizz and split ends by locking in hair’s natural oils. Try using boar bristle brushes that don’t contain metal prongs and use lots of conditioner!
Do any of you have straightening tips? What do you do when you’re taking a break from your flat iron?

April is Earth Month for Aveda and Rizzieri continues to participate through our annual Walk for Water. This year, on April 22nd, Rizzieri staff, students and friends will be walking throughout the Voorhees Town Center in an effort to raise funds for the Clean Ocean Action. The COA works to clean up the shore lines of the New Jersey and New York coastlines. In 2010, Aveda and their partners helped to raise an incredible $3.7 million which supported access to clean water at home and around the world. This brings the cumulative total to $18 million raised during Aveda Earth Month, thus far. This year, Aveda has raised their goals, and Rizzieri will be raising our goals, as well. Aveda hopes to raise $4 million in 2011 through clean water projects. We hope to raise funds through donations, t-shirt sales, and raffle baskets at the Walk for Water this April. For information on the Walk or for Earth Month, please contact Chrissy Oakley at COakley@Rizzieri.com. We look forward to having you help us in our quest to bring clean water to each and every person around the world.

Our bodies are constantly exposed to internal inflammation as a means of defense against infection. A key part in the formation of wrinkles is inflammation, which causes elastin and collagen to deteriorate and eventually collapse. Although inflammation is a part of how the body naturally heals itself, it may cause premature aging of the skin. Some foods, like processed sugars and unhealthy fats and oils, are natural pro-inflammatory agents. Others, listed below, are known to reduce the effects of inflammation and are a delicious way to get a youthful glow.
Spices: Certain spices such as ginger and tumeric are natural anti-inflammatory agents. They contain phytochemicals, which can repress the proteins that lead to gene mutations, decreasing the incidence of inflammation.
Good fats and oils: Foods like olive oil, nuts and avocado contain heart healthy fats that help regulate cell metabolism and suppress inflammation.
Salmon: A top anti-inflammatory, salmon as well as other foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids like flaxseed are necessary for cellular repair.
Brightly colored fruits and veggies: Fruits and vegetables not only act as a source of antioxidants but they also contain phytochemics that buffer and regulate gene expression.
Vitamins: Foods and supplements containing vitamins C and E and minerals can help the body combat the damage created by free radicals.

We’ve all been there: wanting to scream but taking the high road and plastering a smile on our faces instead of revealing our true feelings. But will that innocent act negatively affect your mood?
Smiling may alter the first impressions you make for the better, but the act of smiling itself may negatively impact you. A recent study by a business scholar at Michigan State University found that people in customer service positions who force smiles often end up worsening their mood and productivity. The opposite was true for employees who smile as a result of positive thinking.
However, the findings also suggested that using positive thoughts for deep acting could result in making people feel more like actors than their true selves. To everyone who works in a service-related job: Do you find that the frequency and reasons behind your smiles alter your mood one way or the other?
