Would You Take a Pill to Stop Graying Hair?

When I found my first gray hair as a 20-something, I was in shock. I wasn’t even old enough to rent a car in most states, but there, against my espresso brown strands was a gray hair that could be spotted from miles away. Of course I thought, if someone handed me a pill to rid myself of these aging grays, I would swallow it instantly, no questions asked. So imagine my delight when I heard that L’Oreal is developing that very pill with plans to release it around 2015.

Here’s the thing–drugs that work to enhance your appearance are by no means new. But with the long approval process these drugs go through, many are beginning to second-guess the process.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) evaluate these types of “cosmetic drugs” in the same way as medical drugs. A drug that is used to treat heart disease or cancer undergoes the same process as one to lengthen eyelashes. This is to ensure safety no matter what the substance is. So here’s the question, should we be prioritizing the medical drugs? Does the FDA need to re-evaluate their system? What do you think?

Beauty and the Feast at Rizzieri Aveda School (among the top NJ beauty schools)

Pamper yourself for a cause!nj cosmetology schools

For thousands throughout the South Jersey area, the holidays are a challenging time.  With our economy still struggling to move in a positive direction and unemployment remaining at historically high levels, the number of families in need of help this season has skyrocketed.

Rizzieri Aveda School (among the top NJ beauty schools) is teaming up with the South Jersey Food Bank to make the holidays a bit easier for families in need.  During the month of November, we will give 20% off of your service when you bring in a non-perishable food item for the New Jersey Food Bank.  This is a great opportunity to get ready for the holiday season and “do good” for the needy in our community.

Whether you’re treating yourself to a glamorous new style for the holiday party season, or indulging in a relaxing massage or body treatment, Rizzieri Aveda School (one of the top NJ beauty schools) offers an experienced, professional staff and luxurious amenities to make your visit memorable.
The South Jersey Food Bank has been feeding the hungry, fighting the causes of poverty and helping to improve the quality of life for New Jersey’s needy for over 25 years.   Their “Feed More” program distributed more than 8.5 million pounds of surplus food to over 100,000 needy people in the South New Jersey area last year.  The South Jersey Food Bank’s mission is:

“To provide an immediate solution by distributing food to needy people, teaching them to eat nutritiously and helping them to find sustainable ways to improve their lives.”

Please join us this November as we support this worthy cause and help feed the needy of our area.  Visit one of the top NJ beauty schools, Rizzieri Aveda School.  Call: (856) 988-8600.

Beauty Boosting Fall Foods

Break out the allspice, the pie pan and the crock pot. Fall is finally here and we’re ready to dig into all the autumn-flavored foods that remind us of falling leaves, family get-togethers and sitting by the season’s first fire. The produce section at your grocery is a bounty of beauty-boosting foods that you can add to pies, stews and much more, while reaping their benefits for your skin, hair and smile. Here are a few of our favorites:

Pumpkin: Like many fall squashes, pumpkin is chock full of beta-carotene. Once you’ve consumed pumpkin, it’s converted into vitamin A, which is crucial for cell repair and skin health. Beyond your annual pie, also consider pumpkin soup, ravioli or even adding some cubed pumpkin to a stew.

Apples: These little gems are available year-round, but they’re at their crispy, juicy best during fall–the height of apple season. You likely already know that apples are a great source of fiber that keeps you feeling full. In fact, people who eat apples regularly have been shown to have less abdominal fat. In another form, apple cider vinegar, they can add shine to your hair, remove buildup and even ease dandruff. Once a week, in the shower, shampoo and rinse your hair. Then apply a rinse of apple cider vinegar and water. Leave on for a few minutes and rinse well. Towel dry hair, but forgo the blow dryer. (We don’t recommend this treatment for those of you with color-treated hair. The vinegar can strip the color out.)

Root vegetables: Fall is all about hearty, richly flavored foods. Most notably: root vegetables like carrots, turnips, parsnips, beets and radishes. Not only are these full of vitamins and antioxidants that keep the skin youthful and supple, but finishing a meal with a raw, fibrous, chewy vegetable like one of these will help remove plaque from your teeth and stimulate your gums–which are essential for keeping a healthy, sexy smile. Now, that’s something to really fall for.

Schedule a Hair Check-Up

We use a scale to track our weight-loss progress and facial mapping to see how our healthy our skin is. But how can we analyze our hair to make sure we’re not losing too much of it? Hair loss affects millions of women and you may not notice that you’re shedding too many strands until you’ve lost a large percentage of them.

The new, patented device Haircheck sees what we can’t: how fast we’re losing hair and how susceptible it is to breakage. Using a small, removable cartridge, a trained hairstylist can measure the exact thickness of a section of hair in a couple of minutes and record the number, or score, to compare at future visits. If you’re concerned about breakage, the stylist can measure a section of hair at the crown and further down the section.

A difference of 10 percent or less is acceptable. However, if the hair on the back of your head is more than 20 percent skinnier than the hair at your crown, you may need a protein-rich conditioner to strengthen hair or thermal products to protect it from styling tools and prevent future breakage.

Haircheck provides quantifiable data that helps you figure out if a prescribed treatment is working or if you need to seek out a hair restoration specialist.

How to Wear Sleek Hair

We love the especially sophisticated look of supersleek hair worn in a low bun, like Twilight star Camilla Belle, or a high, ballerina-inspired top knot. The slicked-back style emphasizes powerful makeup and certainly doesn’t get in the way of statement jewelry or stand-out gowns, but is still a dramatic look on its own.

Here’s how you can achieve this style for a power meeting at the office, during your next cocktail soiree or at this year’s holiday party:

Step one: On slightly damp hair, comb a pomade or a wax through your strands.

Step two: Use the tail end of a comb to create an extra-straight part like Belle’s, then smooth your hair into place. If you want a high or low bun, tie your hair into a ponytail, wrap it around the base and pin in place.

Step three: Finish the look with a spritz of lightweight hairspray and smooth out any leftover frizzies with your hand.

The real beauty of this look is that you will go the entire evening without worrying if you need a brush to get your hair in order. Now that’s good lookin’ out!
