Are Migraines Linked to Weight Gain?

Health Tips from Rizzieri Aveda School

Migraines are bad enough on their own. To find out that they could have a relationship to weight gain is downright depressing. A new finding suggests that women who experienced migraines in childhood gain more weight than their peers as adults.

Published online in Headache, the study showed that 40 percent of women with migraines early in life gained an extra 22 pounds after age 18 versus only 30 percent of women who lived migraine free. The data on more than 3,700 women was analyzed for the study.

Though the reasons are still unclear, changes in activity and diet as a result of ongoing pain and nausea may be to blame. Also unclear is the exact connection between migraines and weight gain. One doesn’t necessarily cause the other.

Did you ever have migraines as a kid? If so, what has your experience with body weight been?

Is Stress Destroying Your Smile?

You know that stress can take a toll on everything from your blood pressure to your beauty—but did you know that scope includes your smile? Whether directly or indirectly, stress can have a serious effect on the health and appearance of your teeth and gums.

A high level of cortisol, commonly called the “stress hormone,” is widely known to contribute to weight gain by affecting metabolism and water retention. Lesser known but confirmed by research, however, is cortisol’s contribution to a more aggressive form of periodontal disease.

While it may be difficult to control one’s cortisol levels, there are other, active ways to prevent stress from marring your mouth. A recent study showed that a majority of people have let stress interfere with basic dental hygiene, such as regular brushing and flossing.

Additionally, “stress may lead an individual to abuse tobacco or alcohol,” according to Dr. David Cochran, former president of the American Academy of Periodontology. “These lifestyle choices are known risk factors for the development of periodontal disease, which has been connected to several other chronic diseases, including heart disease and diabetes.”

Letting stress compromise your dental health now can lead to even bigger stresses down the line. Although you may not be able to control the circumstances contributing to your stress, you can take control of how you care for your smile.

The Reason for Rosacea …

Millions of people suffer from rosacea, a relatively common inflammatory condition that can make the face undesirably ruddy and bumpy. Fortunately, in recent years, medical minds have made a huge leap in understanding and treating this frustrating skin problem.

Doctors have long been able to identify what triggers rosacea flare-ups—anything from spicy food to embarrassment—but they didn’t know why patients had the condition in the first place. Research from the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine highlights breakthrough evidence about the reasons behind the condition.

“Too much SCTE (stratum corneum tryptic enzymes) and too much cathelicidin leads to the abnormal peptides that cause the symptoms of this disease,” dermatology division chief Dr. Richard L. Gallo wrote in a study. Although this may not mean much to the layman, it means huge potential for doctors and pharmaceutical companies in their efforts to streamline treatment.

“Antibiotics tend to alleviate the symptoms of rosacea in patients because some of them work to inhibit these enzymes,” Gallo continued; however, “our findings may modify the therapeutic approach to treating rosacea, since bacteria aren’t the right target.”
