Statistics show that many of us don’t get a good amount of vitamin D, which can be partially blamed on a healthy habit: wearing sunscreen. It blocks vitamin D as it defends you from sun damage.However, help may be on the way in the form of a new ingredient that could eventually replace common UV filters found in creams and cosmetics.
According to an article in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science, researchers found that an ingredient called Uniprotect PT-3 protected against oxidative and UV damage at a level comparable to that of an SPF 20 formula, but it allowed for the production of vitamin D in the skin at the same time. It may be a while before we see this technology permeate products, so until it’s available, you should continue wearing traditional sunscreen and seek out vitamin D in healthy foods and supplements. August 16, 2012Gabby Douglas’ Hair Criticisms While Olympic gymnast Gabby Douglas was busy winning gold medals for the U.S., there was a bit of an online frenzy over how the 16-year-old wore her hair. Douglas finally caught wind of the chatter when she searched on her computer on Sunday and was surprised that her hair was receiving so much unneeded attention. “I don’t know where this is coming from. What’s wrong with my hair?” said Douglas, the first U.S. gymnast to win gold in team and all-around competition. “I’m like, ‘I just made history and people are focused on my hair?’ It can be bald or short, it doesn’t matter about (my) hair.” With flips, leaps, and tumbles, Douglas used gel, clips and hair ties to keep her hair in place during her routine, but people took to Twitter to say that Douglas’ hair was not suitable for television and that she needed to represent better. “Nothing is going to change. I’m going to wear my hair like this during beam and bar finals. You might as well just stop talking about it,” she said. “We’re all champions and we’re all winners.
