“Personal appearance workers will grow by 20% from 2008 to 2018, which is much faster than the average for all occupations.” – Bureau of Labor Statistics
Ask hairstylists or make-up artists when they chose to become cosmetologists and you’ll likely hear that the profession chose them. Many of these trained professionals began experimenting with hair and make up at a young age, and grew to develop an artistry for their skills.
The job outlook for barbers, cosmetologists, and other personal appearance workers is bright, with the Bureau of Labor Statistics estimating that the number of workers to grow by 20 percent between 2008 and 2018. While the growth will come primarily from an increase in population, the BLS states, “the demand for hair coloring and other advanced hair treatments has increased in recent years, particularly among baby boomers and young people.”
The BLS also states that estheticians and skin care specialists, especially, will experience large employment gains of nearly 38% during the same time period, while nail technicians are expected to grow by 19%.
